Where can I get ammo cans and decon containers?
Moosiegirl (Candy) bids on large lots of cans of different sizes and
sells them for her cost (VERY CHEAP!) Just email her through her geocaching
profile page and tell her what you need. If she doesn’t have any on hand,
she’ll
include you in her next load. She usually has both the 50 cal and the
30 cal sizes plus the decon containers. Alternatives are local army
surplus shops and e-Bay.
-
What do all those initials stand for in cache logs?
TNLN – Took nothing, left nothing
TNLNSL – Took nothing, left nothing, signed log
TFTC – Thanks for the cache!
URP – Unnatural Rock Pile
UWP – Unnatural Wood Pile
FTF – First to Find
-
Is there someone I can call when I need a hint?
Be sure to get on the contact list for Austin area cachers and carry
the list with you. Moosiegirl (Candy) provides the Geocaching
Hotline. Contact her by email through her geocaching
profile page and
she'll give you her contact info. She’s
done most of the caches in the area and is happy to give you help in
the field. Feeling shy about calling? DON’T
BE! She actually hands out business cards for the hotline and enjoys
helping. Alternatively, The Outlaw doesn’t have business cards, but he’s
got all the info you want upstairs. Email him through his geocaching
profile page for more info.
-
What if I feel like STRANGLING a hider for an especially devious hide?
We sympathize! But you can’t geocache from jail, so go find a 1/1 and you’ll feel better.
-
How do I find out about local events?
Access the Events Calendar through the Main Page of Geocaching.com
and look for listings in Texas. Drill down through those links
and search for events in Austin. Also, every Thursday, new events
will show up in the Weekly New Cache Notification email you can
subscribe to through your profile at Geocaching.com.
-
What if I don’t know anybody. Can I still come to events?
For heaven’s sake, that’s the PERFECT reason to come to events! We’re
a very friendly group, and you know we already have something in common
to talk about!
-
Is there a good way to communicate with other cachers in town?
Yes! Subscribe to our Yahoo Group called CentralTexasGeocachers.
Go to Yahoogroups.com and search for that group. Follow the instructions
for subscribing. Our email address is centraltexasgeocachers@yahoogroups.com.
-
Are there alternatives to Geocaching.com to find caches in Austin?
Several. (List them here.)
-
Can I leave a bouncy rubber ball and take a Swiss
Army Knife?
NO! And I’m surprised you even asked!
-
How would I find partners for a cache outing?
Just post a note to the Yahoo Group and see if you get any takers.
Try to be specific about times and caches you want to do if you have a
preference. Give people a day or two notice. Or just join in on
someone else’s outing. Don’t be shy!
-
Will I ever have as many finds as The Outlaw and TreyB?
NO, and I suggest you give up trying RIGHT NOW before you drive yourself INSANE.
-
I need advice on equipment or software. Who can help me?
Just post your question/problem to the Yahoo Group after scanning some
of the past messages to make sure we didn’t just cover that topic recently.
-
How do I know which caches are not to be missed?
Look for the banner in the cache page that announces the cache as
an Austin Cache Awards Nominee or Winner.
-
What if my question hasn’t been asked yet?
Then just send us a message using the feedback
form on this website.
